Firefighter Frank Nunez, of the Village of Itasca, sadly passed away on Sunday after a tough battle with cancer. The Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois announced his death and the village has come together to mourn this brave hero. Nunez was an admirable firefighter and served with courage and tenacity in his line of work. His loss will be deeply felt in the community.

The Village of Itasca is mourning the passing of beloved firefighter Frank Nunez, who sadly died on Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer. He started with the Itasca Fire Department in 2018 and quickly made his mark as a responsive, dedicated and respected member of the community. However, shortly after he began serving in 2019, he was afflicted with a rare form of soft tissue cancer. Fortunately, Frank managed to fight this off and it went into remission. Unfortunately though, the disease returned in 2021 and spread to his left lung. This time there was no recovery, making this an incredibly difficult period for his family, friends and colleagues who all shared an emotional connection to him. We send our deepest condolences to them all during this tough but bittersweet time.

Who Was Frank Nunez?

Frank Nunez was an inspiring example of dedication and perseverance; Chief Jack Schweidwind noted that Frank had not taken a single day off from work, even though he could have done so many times. Frank’s commitment to his job only grew more impressive when months later, before leaving the hospital for hospice, Frank married his girlfriend Christina at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His persistence and uplifting spirit was certainly commendable, rousing admiration and appreciation in everyone who heard of Frank’s story.

On Saturday, January 28, 2023, the streets of Itasca will be closed off for the funeral and procession of Frank Nunez, a longtime volunteer firefighter with the Itasca Fire Department. The St. Peter’s Church parking map provides attendees who wish to pay their respects a clear overview of designated parking areas and alternate routes. For those seeking to join in the commemoration services within the church, they begin at 11:00 a.m.
